Familiarizing oneself with different text structures is crucial for improving comprehension skills. Each text structure—such as cause and effect, problem and solution, chronological order, or compare and contrast—provides a framework that helps readers understand how ideas are connected and presented. Knowing the specific structure of a text allows students to anticipate where information is likely to be found and how to extract main ideas and supporting details effectively.

When students recognize these structures, they can better predict the type of information being conveyed, facilitating a deeper understanding of the content. For example, in a cause-and-effect text, identifying the cause can help students grasp the subsequent effects more clearly. This structured approach to reading helps eliminate confusion, enabling students to synthesize information and draw conclusions more effectively.

While recalling details, increasing reading speed, and preparing for specific question formats may all be beneficial skills, they do not directly impact understanding the underlying message or concepts in the text as much as familiarizing with text structures does.
